Automattic Joins WordPress Users Against DMCA Abuse Lawsuits

Automattic, the name behind development of the famous blogging platform, WordPress.com is taking measures against the abuse of a legal term which was originally meant to safeguard the online copyrights.

DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) was planned in order to grant a special permission to the copyright holders with which they could extend a request to take down their services that help in publishing the contents to sites like YouTube and WordPress.com.

Lawful notices for taking down the services via DMCA are usual and the act does not hold the platforms related to publishing contents, responsible for acquiring any kind of content.

The act is being misused by the users as some of them are filling fake complaints related to contents that do not possess a copyright license. However DMCA comes with a provision to file a suit against anyone who makes a fake complaint or accusation. Under this provision, Automattic has joined two complaints against the users who have misused DMCA.

The first one is for the website Retraction Watch. An unhappy reader copied some parts of this site and projected it as his work and then files a complaint with DMCA against Retraction Watch. The second one is against a journalism student, Oliver Hotham who requested to take down an article.
